I recently visited The North Room, and what immediately stood out was just how different it feels from the larger, busier restaurants that have become synonymous with the Gold Coast. With its intimate dining room, the restaurant creates an atmosphere where the food, service and overall experience take centre stage.

The North Room has been part of the Mermaid Beach dining scene since 2017, with owners Tim and Shannon Stewart at the heart of the restaurant, creating an intimate dining experience built around thoughtful food, genuine hospitality and a personal approach.
This isn’t somewhere you feel rushed through your meal. Instead, the experience is about taking your time, enjoying each course and appreciating the thought and care behind the food.
With only around 20 seats, the restaurant has a wonderfully intimate feel. There is a genuine connection between Tim and Shannon Stewart, the kitchen team and their guests, making The North Room feel personal, considered and refreshingly different from the larger, busier venues found along the Gold Coast.

The restaurant has evolved into a tasting-menu-only dining experience, with menus changing according to the seasons and the produce available.
Dinner features the restaurant’s long tasting menu, while lunch gives diners a choice between a short or long tasting menu.
I really like this style of dining because it removes some of the decision-making. Rather than working your way through a huge menu trying to decide what to order, you can simply sit back and allow the kitchen to take you through the experience.
The menus are shaped around seasonal ingredients and relationships with local growers and producers, giving the food a strong connection to the region.
Produce Takes Centre Stage
The philosophy at The North Room Mermaid Beach is refreshingly straightforward: quality produce, carefully prepared food and attention to detail.

It is the sort of restaurant that suits a special occasion, a long lunch or dinner when you want to spend a few hours enjoying good food and conversation rather than simply grabbing something to eat.

There is plenty of competition when it comes to restaurants on the Gold Coast, but The North Room has carved out its own niche.
For me, the appeal is the combination of intimacy, thoughtful food and genuinely personal service.
It doesn’t rely on being flashy or trying to be the loudest restaurant in Mermaid Beach. Instead, it lets the food and experience speak for themselves.
And sometimes, that’s exactly what you’re looking for.
The North Room Mermaid Beach: What You Need to Know
The North Room is located at Shop 1, 2527 Gold Coast Highway, Mermaid Beach, on the beach side of the highway between Cronulla Avenue and Ventura Road.
The restaurant currently opens for lunch on Friday and Saturday and dinner from Thursday to Saturday.
Dinner is based around the long tasting menu, while lunch offers the choice of a short or long menu.
Dietary requirements can generally be accommodated with advance notice, although the restaurant currently cannot offer a vegan menu.
Is The North Room Worth Visiting?
If you’re looking for a different style of Gold Coast dining, The North Room is definitely worth putting on your list.
It is intimate, considered and centred around the food rather than the spectacle. For me, that’s part of its appeal.
Mermaid Beach has no shortage of places to eat, but The North Room offers something a little more refined and personal.
It is the kind of restaurant where the experience is just as important as the individual dishes, making it an excellent choice when you want to turn lunch or dinner into an occasion.
